CFRP Rods with Bonded Metal Threaded Inserts
The preferred construction combines a lightweight carbon fiber rod or tube with a machined metal threaded insert. The insert carries the precision thread while its grooved bonding shank transfers axial and torsional loads into the composite through a controlled adhesive joint.
This avoids cutting the primary continuous fibers into a conventional external thread. Direct-machined composite threads may be considered only when the laminate, thread form, load and test plan specifically support that approach.

Male, Female and Mixed Thread Interfaces
Both ends can use the same or different thread sizes, directions and materials. Common configurations include male-to-male, female-to-female, male-to-female and a left-hand/right-hand adjustable pair.
Important: Carbon fiber is electrically conductive. Aluminum inserts may require galvanic isolation when moisture or electrolytes are present.

Metric, UNC and UNF Threaded End Options
Thread size must be chosen together with insert outside diameter, engagement length, edge distances and the required load. Typical inquiries include M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, 1/4-20, 5/16-18 and 3/8-16 interfaces; actual feasibility is drawing-specific.

Adjustable LH/RH Carbon Fiber Linkage Rods
A bonded left-hand insert on one end and a right-hand insert on the other can create a lightweight adjustable tie rod, push rod or control linkage. Lock nuts, rod-end bearings and adjustment range must be included in the assembly review.
Threaded Insert Bonding for CFRP Rods
Joint capacity depends on more than the thread size. Insert shank geometry, overlap length, adhesive, bond-line thickness, carbon surface preparation, temperature and load direction must work as one system.

Bonded Inserts vs. Direct Composite Threads
Do not treat all products called “carbon fiber threaded rod” as equivalent. Standard CFRP, directly machined composite threads and carbon/carbon all-thread have different materials, processes and service conditions.
